The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's team into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had scored just one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.

Tottenham: Spurs travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round League Cup match against the Magpies.
