This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics close to half – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed across decades as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we grew up with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of love into a figure of hate who blesses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this has happened at a slower pace, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
