The Golden State is Fully Free of Drought for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.

After a quarter-century span, every region of the state is enduring drought conditions. This landmark event follows difficult years marked by below-average rain that intensified blaze threats and challenged its huge agribusiness.

A Chart Indicates An Absence of Drought

Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program confirmed that the entire state is clear of dry or drought conditions. This development resulted from weeks of significant storms that topped up key lakes like the state's largest lakes exceeding their typical levels.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a weather expert.

From Intense Storms to Soggy Celebrations

The path to this point included intense and deadly winter storms that struck the state in the not-too-distant past, causing widespread flooding, power outages, and deaths. Although that weather started to mitigate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

As late as late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were still classified as experiencing dryness. Substantial precipitation at the beginning of January finally erased those final dry conditions.

A Crucial Snowpack Presents a Challenge

But, authorities caution that drought-free conditions does not mean having no water worries. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation show it at only about 70% of the historical norm.

This snowpack, which provides a significant portion of the state's water supply as it runs off, is an essential component for the year ahead. Water officials stress that it is too early to draw conclusions for the annual water supply.

“The current pattern right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” commented a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by April 1st so that we’re closer to average.”

Although the monitor is entirely green, the focus now shifts to maintaining this hard-won hydrological health throughout the coming seasons.
