Students Protest Against AI-Taught Higher Education Module: "We Might Have Simply Asked ChatGPT"

A group of students at an English college voiced strong frustration after realizing their career-focused module was mostly presented via AI.

Professional Transition Dreams Diminished

One student and another participant were among 41 students who started a programming course expecting to move into tech careers through a state-backed development scheme.

But the expectations were soon lowered when they experienced automated presentations being presented by an computer-generated narration.

“If we handed in assignments that was AI-generated, we'd be kicked out from the university,” said the student during a captured confrontation with his lecturer.

Several Complaints and Institutional Answer

Participants repeatedly brought up concerns about the automated content, yet the university appears to have persisted using AI-generated content.

Notably, the university maintains strict policies restricting student use of AI, declaring that submitting artificially created work constitutes academic misconduct.

Growing Trend in Higher Education

This scenario reflects a broader trend across colleges progressively using AI tools for instruction, resource development, and customized evaluation.

  • Modern research show nearly a quarter of UK instructors now use AI in their educational practices
  • Official documents have hailed generative AI's ability to transform education
  • But many students find the situation demoralizing rather than transformative

Telltale Signs of Computer Production

Students noticed various indicators indicating AI-generated materials:

  1. Inconsistent language usage between American and British English
  2. Suspicious file names
  3. Surface-level information with periodic allusions to inappropriate US legislation
  4. Audio unexpectedly changing to a Spanish accent before reverting

Learner Frustration and Future Concerns

One student expressed significant worry about his career future, remarking he felt trapped with this course” after putting significant time.

Another participant, experiencing a occupational shift, commented he had selected the course for valuable knowledge rather than merely a credential.

“To be sat there with material that is simply unworthy of anyone's time,” he remarked, “while you could be devoting that time genuinely engaging with something meaningful, is genuinely discouraging.”

Despite institutional claims about upholding educational quality, students felt the last-minute addition of real lecturers was insufficient and delayed” to fix their fundamental complaints.
