Additionally, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of rapid British shipping. Vendors market the substance there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.

This medication is an experimental injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies suggest it could assist patients lose up to 25% of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.

“People are administering materials they can’t verify. Even if the science behind this drug is sound, these online products may not contain what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of an online medical service connected the increase in demand to recent price rises for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are turning to social media. But fake injections are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her staff has previously seen individuals injured by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company investigational product not yet approved … may subject users to potentially significant health risks”.
