Lando Norris Claims First F1 World Championship in Yas Marina Despite Verstappen's Race Triumph.

With a performance full of brave driving, Lando Norris has sealed his debut Formula One world championship by securing P3 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. A podium was enough for the British driver, even though Red Bull's Max Verstappen won the race and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri came home in second.

Norris executed precisely what was necessary in an incredibly high-pressure race at the Abu Dhabi track, featuring a number of bold passing maneuvers, with flawless execution from both the driver and his team.

An Important Achievement for British Motorsport and The Team

In taking his first world championship, Norris is now the 11th British driver to achieve this. It also brings to an end the team's title drought, which dated back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton last won it. Furthermore, it had been 27 years since McLaren achieved the championship double back in 1998.

It represents a stunning revival for the Woking-based outfit, from a nadir in the middle of the last decade when they twice finished ninth in the standings. The revival has been spearheaded by team principal Zak Brown and, most recently, by Andrea Stella, who has delivered an well-drilled team with a race-winning car.

The Story of the McLaren

Regarding his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had been the favorite for a large part of the campaign, there was obvious disappointment at faltering in the later races. A series of difficult weekends and mistakes, including a crash in Baku, proved costly. However, he emerges having demonstrated he is also of champion caliber. To have been so fast in only his third season in F1, with multiple victories, remains very impressive.

Max Verstappen too had been brilliant to take the fight down to the last race. The Dutchman did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the win, but after fighting back from a 104-point deficit in August, he did not quite have the points to catch Norris, ending up just a handful of points short.

Sealing the Deal with Ruthless Precision

He secured his success with clinical precision to take the championship that had been so close but remained just out of grasp as McLaren found themselves floundering at the last two rounds. First a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an egregious strategy call in Qatar.

This represents a significant accomplishment for the 26-year-old in his seventh year in F1, all of them with McLaren. He stuck with the team even during tough periods, convinced they would come good. That faith was vindicated in Abu Dhabi.

He has done a hugely impressive job to persist with his goal, maintaining his cool and confidence even when under the cosh. After losing the lead to Piastri after Saudi Arabia, he nonetheless worked at maximising what he could.

The Title-Deciding Race

At the start, Verstappen held his first place through the first corner, but the main contenders kept it clean. Piastri, starting on the more durable compound, was feisty and made a brilliant move to pass the outside of Norris to claim second place.

It showed the McLarens were free to race, but put Norris under threat from the Charles Leclerc. The first round pit visits saw Norris emerge in midfield traffic, but he passed rivals within a lap and displayed no signs of nerves in his driving.

During the race, he made an absolutely bravura move to dive past two cars in one swoop, climbing to fourth and catching Verstappen's teammate. The rival team told their driver to delay Norris, which resulted in a breathtaking overtaking attempt where Norris went up the inside, nearly completely off the track.

The incident was investigated by the stewards, with a few nerve-wracking laps elapsing before a penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris settled the matter. This decisive charge without being held up was vital to his title fight.

Diverging Fortunes

While Norris was crowned the first Briton to win the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the contrast in form between the two was pronounced. As the young guns fought for the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal conclusion to a difficult season with Ferrari.

Making his debut with the Scuderia had been greeted with excitement but produced what was easily his most challenging year ever, finishing sixth in the championship and failing to secure a podium. He has appeared weary in the final rounds and will aim to rebuild over the off-season.
