India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Haze Following Celebrations

As Tuesday dawned citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "alarming" level.

Extremely High Air Quality Levels

Several parts of the capital registered an AQI above 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the healthy level set by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of eighteen hundred, representing 15-20x above healthy standards.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Recent Developments

Since 2020, authorities had maintained a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the deadly smog that covers the capital as winter sets in.

Yet in recent months, the newly elected local administration approached the supreme court to seek a modification of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "green crackers" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Legal Verdict and Enforcement

Despite concerns of public health and environmental activists, judges agreed to the appeal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during designated periods throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was widespread flouting of the regulated periods across the city, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Many air quality sensors throughout the city registered pollution peaking around the night hours to some of the worst readings observed during the festival in at least the past three years.

International Effects

The proliferation of firecrackers during Diwali also initiated a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani the Punjab region pointing to deteriorating pollution levels in the city of Lahore on pollutants originating in across the border following the festivities.

Persistent Environmental Problem

The dangerously high levels of air contamination in the city have persisted as a serious challenge for over a decade and a half, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Around celebratory seasons, the amount of toxic airborne contaminants in the environment has been documented to increase dramatically to 70% higher the most severe readings ever documented in the Chinese city, which was previously regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Various Pollution Sources

The situation in Delhi is attributed to a convergence of various sources including transportation pollution, dust, construction activities, garbage fires and haze from farm burning in nearby states of Punjab and Haryana.

In these regions, agricultural workers illegally burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, producing hazardous pollution that then gets trapped over the city as cooler air descends.

Health and Economic Impact

Both financial and medical impact on the approximately 33 million inhabitants calling home the capital region is significant, according to multiple studies.

The contaminated air leads to high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is projected to be responsible for 10,000 untimely mortalities each year in the city.
