Mr Trump himself has been explicit that he is propelled by the allure of petroleum resources as well as a desire to project strength, the worldview of key officials, and the appetite for triumphalism as his standing with the American public falters.
Tepid International Response and Waning Global Governance
The international response, especially in Europe, has – with honourable exceptions – been alarmingly quiet. That’s not due to Mr Maduro’s sins, but trepidation regarding Mr Trump’s wrath. The forceful statement from UN Secretary General António Guterres was notable, but this episode highlights the waning power of international bodies.
Mr Trump’s anti-interventionist domestic base could potentially force him to redirect his gaze inward – but escalating insurance prices, financial discontent and distracting files make foreign conflicts more appealing.
Barely 12 months into his time in office. World leaders may regret it if they remain quiet at this juncture, with the question of which nation is next looming.
