Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at Nigerian School

Security breach at school
Educational institutions in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for militant organizations

Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an raid targeting a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The gang of attackers invaded the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Maga, Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.

The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their living quarters, according to a statement.

A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Eyewitnesses described a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to cause panic.

Community members told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into surrounding rural areas.

The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and potential getaway paths.

In the last several years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have increasingly been targeted for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to request monetary settlements or leverage deals with the government.

The incident in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency plaguing the region, leaving families in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their daughters' safe return.

Safety emergency in Nigeria's northern territories has escalated dramatically in recent months, with schools experiencing the greatest impact of the conflict.
