As Beachgoers Fled Attack, Popular Picture Shows Beach Patrol Running ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, views the iconic coast as her back yard. On a recent weekend night, she, like many others in the area, detected cracking sounds ringing out through the community.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching states. Stepping out of her residence, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore made it clear trouble had occurred.

Positioned on the road, talking to a pair who had hurried up the incline still dripping wet, she became aware of someone approaching behind her. This turned out to be a rescuer, sprinting to Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. It was just him running in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to escape from, carrying that big kit and unshod … He’s running at something that undoubtedly every instinct would tell you to move in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely maximum effort racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism Amidst Tragedy

The image Ching captured of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous acts of heroism in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, police and paramedics treating numerous the injured.

Community Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to be shared by the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the scene of the incident transforming into a makeshift hospital. Accounts show that other team members were also seen taking action, such as entering the surf to save people needing help.

After the tragedy, messages of support circulated widely. An online statement shared gratitude for the responders who showed that “kindness will always triumph over evil”.

The group of rescuers issued a statement, noting they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“Thank you all for your supportive words and encouragement. We are overwhelmed by the kindness for our personnel,” the organization wrote. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the hope that it aids those affected.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many permanent beach safety officers, remarked that the team performed exceptionally from the instant the shooting started until late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many emotional accounts, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” commented a mayor.

“These individuals demonstrate altruism every day in ensuring our internationally renowned beaches secure for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on Sunday should be celebrated.

“While we mourn and grapple with the horror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is important that we focus on just how much good we have observed in the presence of such darkness.”
